Your Inner Authority
How You Know
Your Inner Authority is one of the most practical foundations of your Human Design.
Your Energetic Design helps you understand how you're designed to meet life, while your Authority helps you recognize what is right for you within it.
Most of us have become very practiced at trying to make decisions with our minds.
What makes the most sense?
What should I do?
What will other people think?
What if I choose wrong?
Your mind is extraordinary at gathering information, considering possibilities, anticipating outcomes and making sense of your experience. But in Human Design, it isn't where your decisions are designed to come from.
Your Authority points you toward another source of knowing.
Depending on your design, clarity may emerge through an emotional process, an immediate bodily response, instinct, will, the sound of your own voice, your environment, or time itself.
You don't have to make that knowing happen. You begin by becoming familiar with how it already happens in you.
Knowing Isn't Always the Same as Certainty
One of the reasons Authority can take time to trust is that your way of knowing may not feel the way you've been taught a “good decision” should feel.
You may expect clarity to arrive as certainty, a logical explanation, a list of reasons, or a feeling of confidence about what will happen next. But your Authority may give you something very different….
- A response in your body.
- A quiet instinct that appears only once.
- Clarity that emerges over time.
- The sound of truth in your own voice.
- A feeling of willingness.
- A perspective that becomes clearer as you talk in the right environment.
- Or, for a Reflector, knowing that unfolds through experiencing something across a lunar cycle.
Authority doesn't necessarily tell you why something is right. And it doesn't promise you what will happen if you choose it. It gives you a way to become more intimate with your own knowing.
That's why learning your Authority isn't really about becoming better at making the “right” decisions. It's an experiment in noticing: How does knowing actually happen in me?
Your Authority Is Part of Your Design
You don't choose your Authority, and you don't need to figure out which one sounds most like you. It's already part of your Human Design chart.
Human Design has an Authority hierarchy, which means your Authority is determined by the way the centers in your chart are defined and connected.
For example, if your Solar Plexus is defined, you have Emotional Authority. If it isn't defined but your Sacral Center is, you may have Sacral Authority. From there, the hierarchy continues through the other possible Authorities.
You only have one Inner Authority.
And while you may recognize yourself in some of the other ways of knowing described below, your Authority is the particular process your design points you toward for making decisions.
If you don't know yours yet, you can find it on your Human Design chart.

Emotional Authority
Clarity Over Time
Emotional Authority doesn't give you truth in the moment.Your emotional experience moves in a wave, which means something can look and feel different depending on where you are within it. What feels like an obvious yes at an emotional high may feel very different later. What feels impossible at a low may not feel that way forever either.
Your experiment is not to eliminate the wave or wait until you feel emotionally neutral.
It's to give significant decisions enough time for clarity to emerge.
There may still be excitement. Nervousness. Desire. Uncertainty.
Clarity doesn't necessarily mean feeling 100% certain.
It can be the quieter recognition that remains after you've had time to feel your way through.

Sacral Authority
Knowing Through Response
Sacral Authority is available to Generators and Manifesting Generators with an undefined Solar Plexus.
Your knowing happens through your body's response to what life places in front of you.
That response is often described as a gut yes or no — but it can be more nuanced than that.
You may notice energy becoming available. Curiosity. Engagement. A pull toward something. An opening or animation in your body.
Or you may notice that the energy simply isn't there.
Your mind may have plenty of reasons for what you should choose.
Sacral Authority invites you to notice something more immediate: What is my energy doing with this?
-

Splenic Authority
Knowing in the Moment
Splenic Authority is an immediate, instinctive way of knowing. It happens in the present moment — often quietly, quickly, and without much explanation.
You may experience it as a subtle sense of yes, this is safe, no, not this, go this way, something is off, or simply a knowing that arrives before your mind has time to build a case for or against it.
The challenge is that Splenic knowing doesn't necessarily repeat itself. Your mind may come in seconds later asking:
But why?
Are you sure?
What if you're wrong? And because the original signal may have been so subtle, it can be easy to override it in search of greater certainty.
Splenic Authority isn't necessarily loud or dramatic. The experiment is becoming familiar with the particular way your instinct speaks in the moment and learning to notice it before your mind takes over.

Self Projected Authority
Hearing Your Direction
Self-Projected Authority is found in certain Projectors and has a unique relationship with the sound of your own voice.
Your knowing can become clearer as you speak.
Not because the person listening has the answer for you.
Not because you need their advice.
But because saying something out loud gives you the opportunity to hear yourself.
You may begin talking without knowing exactly where you're going and then hear something come through your own voice that feels unmistakably like you.
A direction.
A truth.
A sense of this is where I want to go.The words themselves aren't necessarily the point. You're listening for the quality underneath them:
Do I hear myself in what I'm saying?
Having trusted people who can listen without directing, advising, or trying to solve the decision for you can be incredibly supportive.
They don't need to tell you what to do.
They give you space to hear your own direction.

Mental Authority
Clarity Through Sounding Out
Mental Authority — sometimes called Environmental Authority or having no Inner Authority — is found in certain Projectors.
Unlike the Authorities that arise from a defined center in the body, your decision-making process isn't about locating an internal signal and following it.
Clarity can emerge through being in the right environment and hearing yourself think out loud.
This is sometimes called sounding board authority.
You may talk through a decision with people you trust — not to ask them what you should do, but to hear your own perspective as you speak.
The environment matters too.
Different places and different people can change what you notice, what becomes available to you, and how clearly you can hear yourself.
The question isn't necessarily:
What does this person think I should do?
It may be closer to: What becomes clear to me when I'm in an environment where I can hear myself?
The right sounding board doesn't give you the answer. They create space for your clarity to emerge.

Ego Authority
Knowing Through Will & Desire
Ego Authority is one of the rarer Authorities in Human Design.
Its knowing is connected to will, desire, and what you genuinely want to give your energy to.
For someone with Ego Authority, asking “What should I do?” can pull you away from something much more revealing:
What do I actually want?
Not what would make you look good.
Not what you could prove you can accomplish.
Not what someone else wants from you.
What do you want enough to commit your will and energy to it?
This can feel surprisingly uncomfortable in a world that often teaches us to justify desire, make it reasonable, or put everyone else's wants ahead of our own.
Ego Authority invites you to become more honest about what you are — and aren't — willing to commit yourself to.
You don't need to want everything.
You don't need to prove your worth through what you can make happen.
And desire doesn't have to become selfishness.
It's information about what is worth your will.

Lunar Authority
Clarity Through Time
Lunar Authority belongs to Reflectors.
With no defined centers in the chart, there isn't a consistent internal Authority to turn toward for significant decisions.
Instead, clarity can emerge through time.
In Human Design, Reflectors are encouraged to give important decisions approximately one lunar cycle — about 28 days — before committing.
But waiting a lunar cycle isn't about putting a decision on hold for 28 days and then expecting an answer to arrive.
The Moon moves through all 64 gates of the Human Design chart over the course of its cycle. As it moves, different aspects of your design are temporarily activated, giving you the opportunity to experience the same decision from different perspectives.
Something may feel one way today.
Different tomorrow.
Clearer next week.Rather than needing one of those moments to be the truth, you have time to notice what remains as you move through them.
Talking with trusted people can also be part of this process. Not because they know what's right for you, but because hearing yourself speak about the decision at different points in the cycle can help you recognize what is becoming clear.
Your environment matters too. As a Reflector, the people and places around you can deeply shape what you're experiencing.
Lunar Authority asks for something the world doesn't always make easy:
Time before certainty.
Not because you're indecisive. Because your clarity is designed to have room to unfold.
Understanding is where possibility begins.
Once you know your Authority, you can start noticing it in your actual life.
What happens in you when a decision appears?
Where does your mind go when you want certainty?
What does your own way of knowing actually feel like?
What changes when you give that knowing more space?
The more you notice, the more Human Design becomes something you recognize in yourself.
And recognition opens the possibility of choosing differently.
